Day One: Exploring IPv6I am very excited to announce that I am now a published author! My first ISBN worthy document is a 76-page introduction to IPv6 in JUNOS titled Day One: Exploring IPv6. This is the first booklet in the Junos® Networking Technologies Series and the newest of Juniper Network’s Day One Booklets.

Scott Hogg, Director of Advanced Technology Services at GTRI and Chair of the Rocky Mountain IPv6 Task Force was kind enough to review Exploring IPv6 for me as it was sent to the copy editors, here is what he had to say about it:

Chris Grundemann has created a fantastic introduction to IPv6 that covers the protocol structure as well as Junos implementation details. This guide is easy to follow and is an easy-to-digest tutorial on getting your feet wet in IPv6. This is a great addition to the other Day One booklets that Juniper has made available to everyone.

Thanks Scott!

Day One: Exploring IPv6 is a primer on IPv6 in JUNOS, it is targeted towards readers who are new to IPv6 or new to JUNOS but have a solid networking background. You should read this booklet if you want to:

  • Understand IPv6 address length, and be able to read IPv6 addresses.
  • Understand IPv6 address classifications and how to recognize various well known IPv6 addresses.
  • Enable IPv6 on your network by adding family inet6 and IPv6 addresses to all types of interfaces.
  • Learn to set up and test IPv6 neighbor discovery, and how to implement static routes in IPv6.
  • Use basic IPv6 troubleshooting and verification commands, such as ping, traceroute and various show commands.
  • Complete all of the configuration and testing tasks required to build a basic IPv6 native network.
  • Understand how the three Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) support IPv6: RIPng, OSPFv3 , and IS-IS.
  • Learn to enable and verify the operation of basic dynamic IPv6 routing within your network using your choice of IGP.

You can download the booklet for free [PDF] from Juniper Networks or order the printed copy from Vervante – either way, please let me know what you think!

[UPDATE: Also check out my second book; Day One: Advanced IPv6 Configuration!]
